So, who's your OTP? AD/GG or AD/ED?
« on: October 20, 2007, 08:19:55 AM »

JKR has revealed Dumbledore was gay, and that he experienced an unrequited love for Gellert Grindlewald. She hasn't really said whether Grindlewald himself was gay -- only that DD was in love with him. Personally, I thought there was shippy subtext in the book itself about DD's feelings, but I never really said anything about it, because I figured it was fandom's influence causing me to read into things a bit too much... Well, I was wrong, and I really couldn't be more tickled.

I also get a jealous vibe from Elphias Doge. That obituary he wrote for the Daily Prophet sounds awfully gushy, and dare I say crushy to me.

So who's your OTP now that slash is canon? AD/GG or AD/ED?

You're right. I remember thinking that the obituary was a bit ...weird. But then again, I had other things to worry about than Dumbledore's sexual orientation, like OMG IS HARRY GOING TO SURVIVE? But, now that I think about it, there was probably something there.

I still like AD/GG more.  Tongue It's tragic, and all that.

The obit was so shippy that for a second I though Elphias was a woman.  Cheesy

Wasn't Elphias the same one who went all happy over seeing Harry in the first book, though? Methinks he's just overly eager. A little like Colin Creevey.

I do ship Albus/Gellert now. I really want to explore that relationship.

No, that was Dedalus Diggle. We see several mentions of Diggle before we actually meet him in OoTP. He bowed to Harry in a shop once, too.

Same here.  I am especially fascinated by the emotional implications of DD's decision to bring Grindelwald down.  I'm not usually an angst-fic person, but that is too good to ignore.  I currently have that plot bunny securely caged while I finish up a couple of other projects. Cheesy

But I think Albus/Elphais was more likely to have been mutual.  I get a strong unrequited/one-sided vibe from Albus/Gellert.

It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.

Subtext! This was posted on my flist, and I thought I'd pass the quotes along.

Quote from: DH chapter 2
ALBUS DUMBLEDORE REMEMBERED by Elphias Doge
I met Albus Dumbledore at the age of eleven, on our first day at Hogwarts. Our mutual attraction was undoubtedly due to the fact that we both felt ourselves to be outsiders.

Quote from: DH chapter 2
Stripping away the popular image of serene, silver-bearded wisdom, Rita Skeeter reveals the disturbed childhood, the lawless youth, the lifelong feuds and the guilty secrets that Dumbledore carried to his grave. WHY was the man tipped to be Minister for Magic content to remain a mere headmaster?

Quote from:  DH chapter 8
Doge looked stiff and solemn at this, but Auntie Muriel drained her goblet and clicked her bony fingers at a passing waiter for a replacement. She took another large gulp of champagne, belched and then said, 'There's no need to look like a pair of stuffed frogs! Before he became so respected and respectable and all that tosh, there were some mighty funny rumours about Albus!'
'Ill-informed sniping,' said Doge, turning radish-coloured again.
'You would say that, Elphias,' cackled Auntie Muriel. 'I noticed how you skated over the sticky patches in that obituary of yours!'
'I'm sorry you think so,' said Doge, more coldly still. 'I assure you I was writing from the heart.'
'Oh, we all know you worshipped Dumbledore; I daresay you'll still think he was a saint even if it does turn out he did away with his Squib sister!'

Quote from: DH chapter 18
Dumbledore intended, next, to take a Grand Tour with Elphias 'Dogbreath' Doge, the dim-witted but devoted sidekick he had picked up at school. The two young men were staying at the Leaky Cauldron in London, preparing to depart for Greece the following morning, when an owl arrived....'

Quote from: DH chapter 28
'Elphias Doge mentioned her to us,' said Harry, trying to spare Hermione.
'That old berk,' muttered Aberforth, taking another swig of mead. 'Thought the sun shone out of my brother's every orifice, he did.' (

Same here. I thought he was a woman and was like 'bzuh?' when I realized he was a man, that's how shippy it read to me!

I think AD/ED might have been requited, but AD/GG wasn't. I think both pairings can be fun to explore in fic, especially since Elphias seemed jealous of AD/GG and Grindlewald didn't return Dumbledore's affections. Oh the aaaaaaangst.
